Bruxism or teeth grinding
Karen herself used to suffer a lot from teeth grinding resulting in an unhappy partner :). And many appointments at the dentist. Fortunately, teeth grinding can be solved with a few muscle relaxant pricks in the masseter muscle, also called the musculus masseter.

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of the teeth, usually during sleep. The treatment consists of injecting anti-grinding injections, also known as muscle relaxants, into the muscles on the side of the face, called the chewing muscles. The injections cause the chewing muscle to stop working, and this causes the chewing muscle to shrink.
This relieves the jaw pain and headaches that can accompany it. The overactive muscles are slimmed down, creating a slimmer, oval, V-shaped face. Also called faceslimming.

Who is tooth grinding treatment suitable for?
- Anyone suffering from overactive muscles and pain in the jaw or associated headaches due to teeth grinding.
- Some patients also remove their enamel on their teeth as a result of this problem and need to be referred to a dentist as a result.
When the lower face shrinks, the cheeks appear more prominent. We can control the area of the face and the amount we want to shrink to some extent, and we can also improve the symmetry of the masseter muscles. It is common that one side of the patient is more developed than the other, and we address that problem.

What are the benefits of bruxism treatment?
- Fix pain in the joint next to your ears
- Less jaw clenching at night
- Slimmer lower jaw
Chewing muscle injections are used medically for bruxism, or teeth grinding that may occur involuntarily at night. TMJ dysfunction stands for "tempomandibular joint"; dysfunction, which is exacerbated by overactive masseter muscles. This problem causes pain in the joint next to your ears. Some people in severe cases even experience locking and clicking in their temporomandibular joints, all of which can be remedied. Besides less jaw clenching at night, people with wide faces who have the muscles treated get a more attractive face shape and can also look slimmer.
When will you see results and how long will it last?
- 1 week after your injections, you will notice that the muscle will have less strength so you will grind less at night but also grind less hard.
- After 2 weeks, you will notice that your face will become significantly slimmer and more of a V-Shape.
- Results last an average of 3 to 4 months depending on the severity of your teeth grinding and the size of your chewing muscles.
How often should I have injections against teeth grinding?
- This depends on many factors: your lifestyle, how much you chew, how much you grind your teeth at night, your metabolism, the initial size of your chewing muscles, and your desired results.
- In the initial treatment phase, we may inject every 2 months to relax the jaw muscle until we get the desired results and symptomatic relief. Once the maintenance phase is reached, it usually lasts 3-4 months initially. The more you chew the sooner you need treatment.
- The good news is that the more often we do the treatment, the longer the symptoms remain under control and the slimming of the face lasts longer. Because other muscles begin to take over the action of grinding and chewing, for example, the temporalis muscles.
Are there any side effects?
- Slight pain and bruising may be experienced at the time of injection. As the muscles weaken, you will find that chewing becomes slightly more difficult but this is well tolerated by our patients.
Sometimes masseter hypertrophy (= enlargement of the cheek muscles) is caused by bruxism or teeth grinding. This is the involuntary or habitual grinding of the teeth, usually during the night. This causes the cheek masseter muscles to enlarge. If left untreated, it will lead to TMJ dysfunction (= jaw head pain) and orofacial pain. This is pain at the level of the teeth/jaws and temples.
Bruxism or teeth grinding is often associated with stress.
