How do muscle relaxants or wrinkle injections work?

Muscle relaxant injections are injected into the facial muscles with a fine needle. This blocks the message from the nerve to the muscle. This will reduce the amount of contraction of that muscle and the lines start to become less visible, or even disappear completely.

How long does the effect of muscle relaxants or wrinkle injections last?

After 2-8 days, wrinkles begin to diminish. After 4 weeks, the maximum effect is achieved. From 6-8 weeks, the result is maintained. After 8 weeks, the effect begins to slowly diminish. After 12 weeks the effect is about 50% less, after 4 months the effect decreases by 80%. Most patients opt for a repeat treatment around 3-4 months, but this varies from patient to patient. Men, athletes and those who are more muscular may tend to need larger doses and more frequent doses.

Are muscle relaxants (btx) safe?

Wrinkle injections are a medical treatment prescribed and performed by a physician that carries risks. Generally, these procedures are considered low risk for complications.

What risks and side effects may occur with muscle relaxants (btx)?

What does the doctor consider before placing forehead wrinkle injections?

Before proceeding with the treatment itself, the doctor will check certain things. The following should be examined: The size and height of the forehead in comparison to the other third of the face. Were there complications such as drooping of the eyelids or sagging of the eyebrows or "spocking"? Did the effect of the anti-wrinkle injections last well? Which area came back first? How is the patient's metabolism? Do they exercise? Are they very muscular? Is it the vertical frown line or the horizontal line between the eyebrows that bothers the patient or both? Does the patient want a more natural look, with some more movement, or does he want maximum effect?

How do I choose the number of injections I need?

The doctor will assess the face and decide on the best dose after taking a history and examining the patient. If the patient has a history of poor longevity, or needs high doses or wants maximum effect, a higher dose may be suggested. If a patient has a history of complications with muscle relaxant injections, or if their budget is small or they want a more subtle result, then a smaller dose may be chosen.

How does forehead wrinkle treatment work?

Everything is discussed in detail first so that the doctor knows what your wishes are. It is very important to properly indicate whether you want a natural result or whether you prefer to have as little to no movement in the forehead. The area to be treated will be cleaned with alcohol or chlorhexidine. The doctor will inject the product through a minuscule needle in different areas, this may cause a slight stinging sensation but will be gone within 5 seconds. Pressure is then applied with gauze. The procedure itself takes less than 5 minutes! Most patients give a score of 3/10 for pain sensitivity.

Risks and side effects of forehead wrinkle treatment

In general, treatment of horizontal forehead lines is a very low-risk procedure. Headaches occur in about 10% of new users. Slight bruising occurs in 10% of cases. Slight swelling around the injection sites is common and does not last long (resembles a mosquito bite that disappears again after a few hours). Asymmetry: often one side is treated better than the other, this is usually because the patient is asymmetrical to begin with. Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin. Eyebrow and eyelid dropping are possible risks when treating horizontal forehead wrinkles. It is very uncommon and in our practice over the past ten years the rate is under 0.5%, which is much lower than the indicated rate. The risk increases with larger doses or inexperienced doctors. "Spocking" sometimes occurs because the physician is careful to avoid sagging of the eyebrow at the outer corners. This can be quickly remedied by doing a minor correction.

Who is unsuitable for treatment of horizontal forehead lines?

There are some patients who are unsuitable for the treatment of horizontal forehead lines. E.g. those who really need blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, with excessive upper eyelid skin hanging over their eyes. When horizontal forehead wrinkles are treated in these people, slight sagging of the eyelids will be a problem. Sometimes patients with very large foreheads or receding hairlines do not like the treatment because when the forehead is relaxed, the forehead can appear larger and the hairline can be pulled back even further.

What can you expect after forehead wrinkle treatment?

Immediately afterward, sometimes nothing can be seen. Sometimes there may be redness, bruising, small lumps, which can look like mild acne and usually resolve fairly quickly. Most people could come and go during their lunch break at work and return without their colleagues noticing anything. The effect of the injections only begins to show after 4 to 8 days. The maximum effect of the injections will be at 4 weeks and last for about 3 to 4 months.

How long does the effect of forehead wrinkle treatment last?
