Step-by-step plan for fuller lips with lip augmentation
Not all of us are blessed with full lips or lips that are beautifully proportioned. Maybe you were lucky enough to have beautiful, full lips, but they lost their volume over the years. Fortunately, there is lip augmentation to create the lips you dream of.
Before you decide to have your lips filled, better read up on the matter. That way, you won't have any surprises later on. This roadmap will give you a detailed overview of what lip augmentation is and what will come your way if you opt for lip filler treatment.
STEP 1: Inform yourself about what lip augmentation entails
Just as you don't buy a washing machine without doing a thorough market research, you also don't choose lip augmentation without being well informed. Therefore, here we briefly explain what lip augmentation entails, how it is performed, how much it costs and what the pros and cons are.
What is lip augmentation?
It does what it says: the procedure enlarges the lips. It is a specific application of lip fillers to give your lips a more voluminous look. With lip augmentation, you do not necessarily have to inject both your upper lip and lower lip with fillers.Sometimes it is also sufficient to touch up only your lower lip or only the upper lip. You can also opt for lip augmentation without fillers, consider lipofilling, where you inject a small amount of your own fat into your lips. The result of such surgery is more invasive and also permanent.
It is one of the trendiest cosmetic treatments. Beautiful, full lips are in high demand, in part because of social media. Just think of the lip filler check that made the rounds on TikTok or the hype surrounding Kylie Jenner's lips.
How exactly does lip augmentation work?
So how does it work, such lip augmentation?
- In lip augmentation, you are going to fill the lips with Hyaluronic Acid. This is a substance native to the body that is injected into the lips with a fine needle or cannula. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in our skin.
- The hyaluronic acid present in the skin decreases with aging. This is why our lips lose volume as we age. Hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic and therefore can easily bind the water contained in our skin cells.
- Hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body within two days. Therefore, we cross-link it with other substances so that the injection of lip fillers produces lasting results. Not every hyaluronic acid filler can be used for the lips. An expert cosmetic doctor will know which filler is best suited for this purpose.
- Lip filling is a more complicated procedure. For specific information on how this procedure works, you can always visit our lipofilling lips page.

Lip augmentation price
Last but not least, what will you pay if you want to have your lips filled? How many injections you need depends on the desired result. More filler provides a more pronounced and sensual effect, less filler for a rather natural result. The prices of lipofilling are around 1500 euros.
You better be critical of prices lower than 300 euros. Ever seen videos or testimonials of disastrous results after a filler treatment of the lips? This is often the result of treatment with cheap fillers or fillers that were not injected correctly by a person who does not have the necessary specialization.
A doctor with more experience and specialization in lip plumping will probably charge a little more money for treatment, but you can be sure that treatment will be done correctly. You also have more assurance that you will get a beautiful result.

Pros and cons of lip filling
Benefits of lip augmentation
- A boost to your self-image. Do you sometimes stand in front of the mirror staring at your thin lips, wishing they were just a little fuller? Lip augmentation can give your self-confidence a boost. But beware: plumping up your lips is not a golden ticket to improved self-esteem. It can give you a boost, but don't expect to be 100 percent self-confident overnight after lip augmentation.
- A less severe look. Just as people with a frown can easily look angry or irritated, people with thin lips can sometimes look more severe. Slightly fuller lips make your face look "softer.
A more youthful look. As mentioned earlier, lips sag a bit with aging. By filling them up, you provide renewed volume and a more youthful look. In addition to lip augmentation, you can then opt for other lip fillers to make the lip edge look more youthful.
Disadvantages of lip augmentation
- Lip augmentation treatments can feel uncomfortable because hyaluronic acid is injected into the lips through a thin needle or cannula. Although treatment feels uncomfortable, it does not hurt. If you are still afraid of feeling pain, you can opt for local anesthesia.
- Lip augmentation has short-term side effects such as swelling, bruising and redness. These side effects disappear after one to two weeks.
Treatment can lead to various complications such as numbness (only in severe cases), inflammation, allergic reactions and nodules. These complications occur mainly if you get treated by an incompetent doctor with limited knowledge of fillers, by, for example, injecting the fillers in the wrong place or using fillers that are not quality.
STEP 2: See what types of lip augmentation are possible
In general, there are two types of lip augmentation. A temporary one with Hyaluronic Acid and a permanent one with your own body fat, also called lipofilling. The effect of both types was already discussed in the first step. Here we explain for whom which type is intended.

Temporary lip augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid
The temporary variety disappears from the lips on its own after about six to 12 months. This is because the body itself breaks down the Hyaluronic Acid-based filler. Suppose you are not satisfied with the temporary result after all, you can still remove the filler from the lips with injections of hyaluronidase.
Temporary fillers allow you to experiment with how much extra volume you want in the lips and what suits your face. Do you find it too much after the first treatment and prefer a natural result? Or would you like to accentuate your upper lip a little more next time? With temporary fillers that's no problem.

Permanent lipofilling
- With lipofilling , we create a permanent result. Permanent as in: forever. This is not something you do just like that, so it is important to think carefully before you choose lipofilling.
- What we recommend is to experiment with temporary fillers first. That way you can discover what you like and what feels right for you. With lip augmentation with lipofilling, it is even more important to rely on a specialized and experienced doctor who will give you honest advice. Only a specialist will be able to create a result that best suits your needs.

STEP 3: Choose an experienced cosmetic doctor to perform your lip augmentation surgery
As we have mentioned several times, it is crucial to choose an experienced and reliable cosmetic doctor to perform the treatment. To choose a good specialist, you can do research by reading reviews, looking at before and after photos and asking critical questions.
It's also best to check if the doctor is registered as a plastic surgeon. You can do that by checking if the Riziv number ends in 210 or by checking if the surgeon is listed on the RBSPS.

STEP 4: The treatment for full lips
Patient selection and initial consultation
At Sarasin, we always check your eligibility for lip treatment. Once we are sure we can perform the treatment on you, the initial consultation or treatment will proceed.
Not everyone needs a consultation prior to treatment. So you can also choose to book a treatment immediately. If you prefer a consultation because you have doubts or questions, this is certainly possible. We will then look together at your wishes and possibilities and inform you of the possible risks and side effects.
Lip plumping: the treatment itself
After the consultation, we proceed to the treatment. A treatment for a temporary result takes an average of 15 to 30 minutes. If you opt for lipofilling, the treatment takes about 1.5 hours.

STEP 5: Aftercare of lip augmentation
Aftercare
- After treatment with fillers, the lip may look swollen and you may have to deal with bruising. As a result, you will experience some pain. We recommend ice packs to address those discomforts.
- Also after lipofilling treatment, we recommend keeping your lips cool to reduce swelling (after lipofilling, you will have severe swelling anyway). Furthermore, the recovery time from lipofilling treatment is much longer (2 weeks or longer) and you are more likely to have bruising on and around the mouth.
