What is a facelift?

Before a facelift can take place, a consultation with our surgeon always precedes the procedure. During the consultation you will have plenty of time to ask your questions and discuss your wishes and expectations. Our surgeon will assess whether a facelift is an appropriate treatment for you, and which type of lift will give the best results. If necessary, the doctor may recommend and apply another treatment.

Fine wrinkles tend to be treated with botox or fillers. Deeper grooves are addressed with lipofilling. With deeper wrinkles and moderate facial aging, the skin must be re-draped. A facelift brings the sagging tissues back up.

The recently developed MACS lift gives an almost invisible scar and is performed under full anesthesia in the day clinic. Combination with lipofilling is also possible.

Before and after care of a facelift

How does a facelift work?

In this cosmetic surgery, a plastic surgeon removes wrinkles and folds by tightening your facial skin and the underlying fat, muscle and connective tissues. Your facial features are "lifted," so to speak, giving you a fresher, more youthful appearance. First, an incision is made in front of the ear. Then the skin is detached from the connective and muscular tissue. Next, this tissue is lifted. Because the connective and muscular tissue is firmer than the skin itself, the skin will naturally lift with it. The tissue is tightened and secured and finally the excess skin is cut away.

At what age does a facelift make sense?

You are suitable for a facelift if you suffer from: sagging skin on your lower jaw, sagging cheekbones, deep wrinkles and folds, deep furrows between the corners of your nose and mouth. It is difficult to put an age on this. Some people will be affected more quickly than others. Most lifts are done in people from 40 to 60, when the signs of aging progress to deeper wrinkles and folds. Exactly at what age a facelift becomes useful further depends heavily on a number of personal factors: people who smoke a lot, consume excessive alcohol, expose their face to the sun a lot or are often subject to stress are much more likely to be considered for a facelift than those with a more healthy lifestyle. However, smoking cessation is mandatory at least 6 weeks before the procedure!

Possible complications with a surgical facelift

Serious side effects are extremely rare. A common complication immediately after the procedure is a bruise. A more severe bruise usually heals after 3 to 6 months.

Scars after a facelift

Facelift scars always occur near the ear. How large this scar will be depends on the technique used and the size of the area treated. The advantage of a scar directly against the ear is that it can be easily camouflaged by wearing or growing hair a little over and along the ear. Full scar recovery can take a year or even longer. Scars lie directly against the ear and often in a natural crease so they are not very noticeable, especially when they have healed nicely.

How long do the results of a facelift last?

On average, you will enjoy a facelift for 10 to 15 years. Although the clock has been turned back several years, the aging process does continue. By living a healthy life and taking good care of your skin, you will get the most out of the procedure. Of course, you will always keep the head start you get from the surgery.
