Breast Lift or Mastopexy

On the one hand, due to the effect of gravity, and on the other hand, due to the aging of tissue structures, the breast, which normally has a firm shape, with a nipple high up on the breast tissue, may begin to sag. In order to give the breast back its firmness and return the nipple to its proper position, a breast lift is indicated.

A breast lift or mastopexy involves remodeling the existing breast tissue to the desired shape and size. This sometimes involves removing excess breast tissue (breast retroughion) or just adding lost volume (breast augmentation). In the latter technique (breast lift with simultaneous augmentation), a silicone prosthesis or one's own fat tissue is placed and the excess skin removed.

As shown in the picture, a breast lift almost always requires the nipple to be moved upward. Since the nipple will be moved up, there is always a scar around the areola.

Your areola can be made a little smaller as often desired. It is possible to color this scar afterward nicely with Dermatopigmentation, which can also give the areola itself a nice light brown/pink tint.

In young people with good skin quality, and if the sagging is not too severe, this may be sufficient. Along this path, additional volume with own fat tissue or an implant can then also be inserted.

Techniques for a breast lift or mastopexy

A breast lift involves removing excess skin from the breast. This means that the breast becomes slightly smaller. Therefore, for smaller breasts, the breast lift is often combined with the placement of a small implant or lipofilling to get an enlarging effect as well.

Once the skin is removed, the nipples and breast tissue are elevated. A circular scar will form around both nipples. In many cases, a "sagging" breast can also be corrected by just breast augmentation with prostheses or your own fat.

What does a breast lift with prosthesis involve?

Are you considering a breast lift with prosthesis? A breast lift is one of the most commonly performed breast surgeries. This procedure is always performed under general anesthesia.

A breast lift will give your breast a bit more volume anyway because one is actually going to raise the "sagging tissues" back higher and attach them. After extreme emaciation, prolonged breastfeeding or just laxity of the skin, many women opt for a breast lift with prosthesis or their own fat. Because you can't always give enough volume just by lifting the breast.

Scar after breast lift

You will have a scar around the areola. Depending on the technique, more severe cases will have a vertical scar from the areola to the inframammary fold.

In very severe cases, it is sometimes necessary for the surgeon to also make a horizontal scar in the breast crease (anchor).

This is avoided as much as possible. It is more useful at the beginning to accept a small excess of skin at the bottom that has a chance of pulling away, than to immediately create a scar that is sure to remain there. In any case, of course, care is taken that these can be hidden in bra or bikini, and that there is optimal aftercare so that they are as invisible as possible.

During a breast lift, it is not always possible to make the breasts exactly symmetrical. Symmetry depends on the position and shape of the natural breasts. Also, the shape and sensitivity of the nipples after surgery may be different than you expected. It is good to realize that, due to the strong tension in the tissues after surgery, the final model will look different than just after correction. The final result will be visible only after at least two months. The breasts will then become more flexible and sag slightly. Sensation in the nipples will return after three to six months.

Postoperative bras

After surgery, you should wear a well-supporting bra without underwire. Our bras are of good quality and available in several models. There are bras with reinforced side cups, a hook closure at the front or back, with adjustable straps or fixed wide straps.

Your post-operative bra will be provided for you immediately after surgery; upon waking, you will already be wearing it.

How do you treat the wound?

Instructions for after breast augmentation and breast lift

You may shower the day after surgery. Be sure to keep the wound dry. The plaster is waterproof and can be patted dry. Leave the micropore plaster in place for two weeks - this plaster is attached to the suture. The suture dissolves on its own and should not be removed.

Two weeks after your breast lift surgery, the first follow-up check will take place and any buttons will be cut. Wear a well-supporting, post-operative bra without underwire. The bra should not be too tight, but should fit snugly. Always wear the bra - day and night - for six weeks after surgery.

What else to consider:

The first two weeks: do not raise your arms, do not exercise

The first six weeks: get plenty of rest and no physically strenuous activities - such as in the household, think: vacuuming, cooking or heavy lifting. Also, do not swim or go to the sauna.
