Possible techniques in breast augmentation
As a patient, it is important that you are clear about what your wishes are; this is something very personal. What you like, your friend may not like as much and vice versa. Only during a consultation with our surgeon can the different options be discussed. In any case, Sarasin Clinic always opts for the least invasive technique. This means that we opt for a minimal incision. As a result, you will have less scarring. The incision site can be in 3 places:
- through the armpit
- through the areola
- or as many do: just below the inframammary fold
Depending on your own breast print and your wishes, you will work with the surgeon to decide which technique and prosthesis is best for you. A prosthesis can be placed either above or below the muscle.
1. Breast augmentation technique with prosthesis above the muscle
This technique places the prosthesis above the large breast muscle. Here you get a very natural result.
This technique is better not used if you are very thin or have very thin skin. In that case, you may feel and see the edges of your prosthesis. Also keep in mind that as you age, the skin will become thinner. The prosthesis will then have little support when it sits above the muscle.
2. Breast augmentation technique with prosthesis under the muscle
In this technique, the breast augmentation prosthesis is placed under the large breast muscle. The breasts will be firmer and will also feel harder. You will not feel the edges of the prosthesis. There is less encapsulation than placing the prosthesis above the muscle. It may sometimes look a little less natural.
3. Breast augmentation Dual Plane technique
In this technique, the top of the prosthesis is under the muscle, and the bottom of the prosthesis is placed under the glandular tissue of the breast. Hence the name "Dual Plane."
Advantage: that way, in skinny people, you don't see the edges of the prostheses at the top. And you have less chance of capsule formation. This while still allowing a natural curve of the breast at the bottom.

How to choose the right prosthesis for breast augmentation?
This is mainly something the doctor will suggest. This will be decided based on what your own breast looks like, and what your wishes are for your "new breasts." Using a 3D simulation, the surgeon will show you what the options are for your body. The 3D simulation will give you an idea of what shape of prosthesis and volume would best suit you. Think of it as a kind of Photoshop program with which we demonstrate the possibilities.
1) Anatomical or drop prostheses:
Disadvantage: harder, prosthesis can rotate
2) Round prostheses
Disadvantage: gives slightly faster crease formation
Different projections of the prostheses
(projection = volume visible at the top of the breast)
Your prosthesis also has a difference in projection: low, medium or high profile
- low profile: provides subtle breast enhancement
- high profile: gives a firm full chest

Aftercare for breast augmentation
- the first 24 hours it is mandatory that an adult remain near you
- Do not drive vehicles for the first 48 hours after surgery
- do not drink alcohol
- No physically strenuous exercise, no household chores, no sports (including sauna) for 6 weeks
- lifting nothing heavier than a 1.5 L bottle of water
- do not raise your arms above your head
- Never lie in the sun with your scar exposed
After booking surgery, you will receive all necessary documents in a folder. You will be given a comprehensive post operative protocol with very clear instructions regarding medication policy and care.
What you need to know before your surgery:
- you complete a pre-operative questionnaire
- You will be given the Client Informed Consent to sign
- the operation will take an average of 1 hour
- the surgery will be done under full anesthesia so you will feel no pain
- You will wake up in the recovery ward of our Private Clinic in the presence of our nurse
- most people are allowed to go home 4 hours after surgery
- you may leave recovery only when you can drink and urinate, are conscious. Your breathing and blood pressure should also be stable. The doctor will decide when you are ready to go home.
- Immediately after your surgery, you will be wearing a supportive bra. You will keep this on for 6 weeks and should never take it off. Except for changing or washing the dressings from the wounds.
- The day after your surgery, you will be called to ask how you are doing and if everything is okay with you.
