Menboobs or gynecomastia

In some cases, after puberty in men, there is permanent breast enlargement. Also called gynecomastia or menboobs. Besides puberty, obesity, massive weight loss, underlying hormonal disorders and medication use are the main causes. Therefore, an underlying cause must first be examined in consultation with the endocrinologist.

Once all reversible causes have been ruled out, and surgery is the only solution, the circumference of the chest can be improved.

Technique for gynecomastia or menboobs

1. Liposuction for menboobs

If there is only limited breast swelling, liposuction of the excess breast tissue may be sufficient. This is a relatively simple procedure with no visible scars. This does require first determining whether there is not too much hard glandular tissue, but rather fatty swelling. If this is not clear on examination, an ultrasound may help.

2. Small moon-shaped incision just on the lower edge of the areola

With more pronounced forms, the excess breast tissue is removed through a crescent-shaped incision at the edge of the areola. The hard glandular tissue, although much larger than the length of the scar, can be removed bit by bit along here. This scar is almost invisible. This technique can be combined with liposuction, as most gynecomasties are a combination of hard glandular tissue behind the nipple, with more fatty tissue toward the edges of the breast.

3. Remove excess skin from menboobs

With a really large breast, excess skin may also need to be removed. In this case, a scar should be made around the entire areola so that the excess skin can also be removed. Even after massive weight loss, there is too much excess skin to remove along the nipple alone. This is then removed along the fold at the bottom of the breast so that the scar is in the least visible place.

Of course, there are bandages on the wounds and sometimes drains that are usually removed within 24 hours. After surgery, the surgical area will be sensitive. Usually a simple painkiller is enough to relieve the discomfort. A removed mammary gland is usually sent for pathological examination.

Results are usually known at the first outpatient checkup after surgery. For the first six weeks after surgery, it is recommended that you avoid heavy lifting and fitness or sports. To support wound healing and prevent edema formation and swelling after surgery, you should wear a supportive corset/jacket for 6 weeks.

Of course, due to wound fluid and bruising, the breasts may be somewhat swollen for the first few days to a week. This will disappear by itself. After two weeks, the stitches are removed.
