Botox: what is it and how does it work?
Let's dive right in: what is Botox and how does it work? We'll explain it to you below!
What is Botox?
Botulinum Toxin or Botox is a natural protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. The stuff falls under the heading of "neurotoxins," which are toxins that affect the functioning of our nervous system.
Botulinum toxin is going to block the transmission of impulses between muscle cells and nerve cells. You can also refer to Botox with "BTX. Put more simply, Botox is a muscle relaxant or muscle relaxant.
How does Botox work?
Injectables with botulinum toxin thus cause your muscles temporarily relaxcausing jless wrinkles and lines lines when you tighten your facial muscles. The botox treatment therefore has a preventive effect and helps avoid wrinkles.
Fun fact: many people think that Botox is a product name, but that is not the case. In fact, Botox is a brand name. So it is a specific brand within the category of muscle relaxants. In addition to Botox, you can also find several other brands of muscle relaxants such as Azzalure® and Bocouture®
The drug is injected with a thin needle into the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles or lines in your face.
Botox is used for, among other things:
- crow's feet
- frown lines
- gummy smile
- drooping corners of the mouth
- lift of the eyebrows
In addition, Botox can also help with:
- excessive sweating
- migraine
- bunny lines
- teeth grinding (bruxism)
- face slimming
Result muscle relaxants
It often takes several days for the results of a botox treatment to be fully visible. The results last about three to four months persist. There is a possibility of repeating the treatment after this period.
With many clients, we see that the following treatment lasts for a longer period of time, up to six months. Because the muscles were already relaxed in the period before, the results remain longer.
Fillers: what is it and how does it work?
We now know what we can use muscle relaxants (BTX) for: preventative against wrinkles and against migraines, teeth grinding or a gummy smile. So what do fillers do? We explain it to you below!
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers
Fillers contain the substance hyaluronic acid in order to provide natural fill deep wrinkles, enlarge lips, lift cheekbones, compensate for volume loss and accentuate.
What is hyaluronic acid?
The substance hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our skin and keeps our skin supple and resilient because it can support thousand times its own weight in water. Why is this so important?
Because hyaluronic acid can hold so much water, it is able to add volume into your skin. This is perfect for when you naturally lack volume (for example, in your lips or cheekbones) or when you are dealing with volume loss due to aging.
Temporary fillers
Because hyaluronic acid is a substance native to the body, this also means that the filler is broken down by the body over time. On average, fillers last about six months to a year. After that, you will need another treatment with fillers to prolong the results.
How do fillers work?
By attracting moisture to the area where they are injected, fillers will beautifully 'smoothing'. They will therefore cause the volume increase where they are injected.
A filler, like Botox, is applied with a fine needle. Thanks to the anesthetic contained in the product, the punctures are barely felt. The treatment takes about fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on where the filler is used. The result of a filler treatment is immediately visible.
At Sarasin Clinic, we have fillers for a variety of areas:
The biggest differences between Botox and fillers
So what is the main difference between Botox (i.e. muscle relaxants) and fillers? The main differences are in the effect of hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin and therefore also in the application in terms of treatments.
The thing is, Botox works on the muscles. It is going to slacken the muscles, preventing them from contracting, thus reducing muscle tension. Eventually, the muscles start to relax, so wrinkles don't have the chance to be formed.
This means that Botox mainly has a preventive effect: it counteracts the appearance of wrinkles. You can read more about this below. Fillers are mainly used to add volume to the skin.. Especially for deeper wrinkles it is interesting.
Similarities Botox and fillers
Above, you read about the difference between Botox and fillers. So although fillers and Botox have different effects and therefore different applications, there are also similarities between the two products.
One is that they both a injectable treatment are. That is, in the treatments, we inject the substance into the face with a thin needle.
In addition, the results of both treatments are almost immediately visible. They also give the possibility for a personalized treatment, so that your desired result can be realized.
Both treatments also offer the possibility of reducing wrinkles with visible but natural results.
