There are few things as cliché as that bad tattoo you got when you were wild and young. It may have seemed like a good idea to have your loved one immortalized on your skin. But what if that love passes or you just don't like the tattoo after a few years? That, unfortunately, is what happened to me. A couple of BIG, but also NOT nicely placed tattoos on the back of my leg, a very large one on my lower abdomen from left to right, my neck & hands that I regretted almost immediately after getting them. And now I am finally having my tattoos removed. A painful joke right?

Regret

Most people who know me do not even know about my tattoos that are not visible, I will rarely talk about them. Or I wear my hair up, hide my legs, neck, belly... Unfortunately, I can't hide my tattoos on my hands, but I am constantly trying to hide the "failed" tattoos, which I had covered at the time in the hope that they would become "better and more beautiful", but they have only become "bigger, uglier and darker", you can hardly see what they are. I always think to myself "as long as people don't think I like those things" Quite a depressing way to live.

Past mistakes

A lot has happened in my life since the tattoos were placed. I have changed a lot from before, let's just say that with age comes wisdom, and I have now left the "wild years" behind. I find that I don't think my tattoos fit me anymore. Given all the big changes in my life. So the fact that I want to have my tattoos removed didn't come out of the blue. I had been noticing for a while that I was trying to cover the tattoos more and more, and I also didn't like it when people asked about them.

It just makes me feel very uncomfortable, and I also do this a bit out of respect for my Moroccan family (because you all know I'm half Moroccan half Belgian). In fact, it was so bad for me that I hid from my family and kept aloof until I could laser away from them, because I was ashamed of the mistakes I had made when I was younger and therefore I isolated myself and alienated myself from my own family. Which I regret so much now... Fortunately, I am picking up that bond little by little!

Less is more

So if you ever want to get a tattoo, think about it carefully first and make sure your tattoo artist can get your tattoo perfectly the way you want it! Because also the pain of getting a tattoo removed would be much worse than getting the tattoo.

The big day

A few weeks ago, I decided to just go for it.

"To finally redeem myself," I made an appointment with Nurse Karen at Sarasin Clinic in Sint-Martens-Latem to have my tattoos removed with a Pico Laser. A groundbreaking technology that uses ultra-short, high-pressure pulses to effectively absorb the ink. My tattoos will therefore disappear faster than with an ordinary laser.

At Sarasin Clinic you will enter a clinic with experienced specialists performing aesthetic treatments. (Not just another beauty salon FYI) Here you are sure to get correct price & safe treatment from doctors who will assist you!

Every moment is a new beginning

At the appointment I had to fill out a fairly extensive medical history. I was given some information before I started, we also discussed starting with the biggest tattoo on my belly (A cover up where roses are now tattooed but where my ex boyfriend's name used to be)... A very stupid mistake to get a tattoo like that I know now, so please take an example from me and never do something like that because sometimes things in your life turn out differently than you had envisioned. And you NEVER know that in advance.

For me, it literally felt like a relief, to finally be relieved of all the bad memories! It was actually so emotional for me when this day finally arrived! I had wanted this for so long, to erase everything the tattoos and all the thoughts and sad memories surrounding them! I am so grateful to Sarasin Clinic for helping me with this.

Experience tattoo removal with the Pico Laser

Let's talk about the laser.

Goggles on and ready to go! My heart was pounding in my throat. But you really feel how they treat people that they have tons of experience. I was so nervous, but they put me very at ease before and during the treatment. So everything went very smoothly.

Nurse Karen said, "I do one shot with the laser first to see how the skin reacts, and to let you feel what a laser does. After that, let me know if I can continue." ZAP! My skin is hit by a sharp tap. (It felt like a rubber band you shoot hard against the skin) It's not that bad, so I told her she could just keep going.

Pain

But once the skin therapy actually starts, the pain is excruciating. Because the tattoo is very large and also in a sensitive area.

I really think with my small tattoos that this won't be too bad because this will pass super fast, the treatment will be very short. But in this case the treatment took longer, because of the bigger tattoo, and it was painful after a while.

Of course, this also depends from person to person and how high your pain threshold is.

Anesthesia

She told me that the treatment could be completely painless, I wouldn't feel anything, they can optionally sedate if the pain is unbearable! So I think that's a good thing about a clinic because they are allowed to do that. (You don't have this luck at a beauty salon)

Experience tattoo removal - after treatment

After treatment "aftercare is super important" With proper care of the wound, not much can go wrong!

This photo was taken just after the first treatment, many white spots are already visible.

Black tattoos are easier to remove than colored ones, after 6 weeks I have my next treatment (I will need about 4 to 5 treatments).

How many treatments you need depends on how long the tattoo has been there, how much ink is in it and how deep it is in your skin.

Stay tuned!

I'll also post a video on my page later about the whole treatment!
