Botox treatment of the lips
Do you have drooping corners of the mouth, asymmetrical lips or a gummy smile? Then you may benefit from a Botox treatment for your lips or the area around your mouth.. We would first like to explain to you how Botox works and then explain how it can help against the above ailments.
What is Botox?
Botox is short for botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Such a neurotoxin can affect the functioning of our nervous system.
Botox is not a product name, but it is a brand name. What does that mean? Well, Botox is a specific brand within the category of muscle relaxants, but the name is often used to refer to the entire category of muscle relaxants.
Thus, we may say "he had Botox injected," when there are other brands of muscle relaxants on the market and deployed. Examples of other brands are Azzalure® and Bocouture®..
At Sarasin Clinic, we use different brands, but always with the highest quality standards. For example, our doctors may recommend different brands of muscle relaxants for different areas of your face. Only in this way can we guarantee you the very best results..
How does Botox work?
When your plastic surgeon injects a muscle relaxant into the skin, what happens? When you inject botulinum toxin, you will (partially) block the signal transmission between the muscles and the nerves (partially) block ..
The result? The muscles will no longer contract and so instead relax. A lot is said about Botox. This is why we wrote a blog in which we scientifically debunk or confirm the the myths about Botox..
How does a botox treatment happen?
The attending physician will use a thin needle to apply the Botox (or other muscle relaxant) into the skin. You will mainly feel the first prick in the treated area. This is because there is anesthetic in the injections, providing a local anesthetic. This way you won't feel any discomfort.
Botox lips: the possibilities
Botox or other muscle relaxants are never injected into the lips to create volume. There are fillers for that (you'll read more about that later). However, Botox can be used in the area around the lips and mouth to treat, for example, asymmetry, droopy corners of the mouth or a gummy smile disappear.
Gummy smile
Do you have a gummy smile or gum smile? We speak of a gummy smile when a lot of gums exposed when you smile. Many people are very insecure about this. Fortunately, it is solved with botox in 1, 2, 3!
By injecting muscle relaxants at the upper lip, we cause the muscles to relax, so the the upper lip does not lift so high when you smile.. The muscle relaxants are injected in a total of three places near the lips.
After about 2 to 8 days you will see the result of the Botox at your lips: a beautiful smile! Treatment with muscle relaxants gives temporary results, but you can repeat the treatment repeat the treatment as often as you want (every 3 to 4 months) to maintain the results.
Hanging corners of the mouth
Pendulous corners of the mouth can have two causes: sagging skin due to aging or because the muscle running from the corner of the mouth to the jaw is too strong is. Only in the latter case can you use botox to address drooping corners of the mouth.
With Botox, you will weaken the muscle, which will stop the corners of your mouth from drooping. That way you get rid of a gloomy look and look fresh and youthful again!
Botox lips price: drooping mouth corners
Before you can undergo botox treatment for drooping corners of the mouth, you must sit down with the treating physician to discuss whether such treatment is the best way to address your drooping corners of the mouth.
Exactly how much the treatment costs, you will also discuss with your esthetician. Depending on the number of injections needed or desired, the price may logically vary.
Asymmetrical lips
Asymmetrical lips can be caused by a difference in volume in the lip itself or by muscles near the lips that move differently. In the latter case, muscle relaxants can provide relief.
With Botox, you can cause one muscle relaxes more than the other, reducing the asymmetry in the lips. In that way you create again a symmetrical whole, and that contributes to the overall symmetrical look of your face.
Botox asymmetric lips: price
Also for this treatment, you will need to meet with your treating physician to discuss whether Botox is the best way to address asymmetrical lips. The price of the treatment will be communicated during this conversation.
Filler treatment of the lips
Before we list what the possibilities of lip fillers are, it is important to understand how they work. Therefore lightn briefly what substance(s) fillers are composed of, how we apply them and how many fillers you need to fill your lips.
What are fillers?
Fillers for the lips always consist of hyaluronic acid (a substance native to the body) in combination with another substance to ensure the durability of the filler. We call this cross-linking.
How do fillers work?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in our bodies. Due to its unique properties, hyaluronic acid is able to add volume to our skin. Hyaluronic acid is used both to restore volume as well as to add volume.
Lip fillers are also made up of hyaluronic acid. By applying injections of hyaluronic acid into the lips, you will create volume and firmness where needed. Both young people and people of more mature age use hyaluronic acid in the lips for many reasons: volume restoration, lip enhancement, creating symmetry...
How does filler treatment of the lips happen?
How exactly do we apply Hyaluronic Acid-based lip fillers? The filling of the lips themselves is done with a fine needle (cannula) in order to cause as little trauma to the lips as possible. That way we limit any swelling and bruising afterwards.
To reduce pain during treatment, we use a surgical grade anesthetic cream. As a result, at most you will experience an uncomfortable feeling when the lips are injected.
Filling the lips does not take long (maximum 30 minutes). So that uncomfortable feeling is only for a very short time.
Techniques application lip fillers
For the application of fillers in the lips, there are different techniques. We use serial punctures and linear threading (Russian method). Which technique we use and whether we combine techniques depends on the desired shape of your lips.
Because Because every lip is different and everyone wants different results want, there is no universal way to apply lip filler to inject. Where, how deep and what amount of filler we apply depends from person to person. You can rest assured that our attending physician will advise you thoroughly on this and apply the most appropriate technique for your specific needs.
The location and depth of the injections also determine what will change the appearance of the lip. An experienced doctor knows exactly where to inject the fillers to achieve a certain result. Because of this, there is a wide variation in the possible results of fillers in the lips.
Lip filling with lip fillers: the possibilities
Lip filler to go from narrow lips to fuller lips
The first option we discuss is also immediately one of the most popular, namely a lip augmentation. In this treatment we are going to enlarge the lips by using injections of Hyaluronic Acid.
Lip augmentation is especially sought after by people with thin lips, because narrow lips quickly give you a severe appearance. When you get lip augmentation you create fuller lips that give you a softer appearance .
Beautiful, full lips are very trendy. One advantage of filling lips with lip filler is that they temporary. This means that if full lips are ever no longer the way to go are, your lips can evolve with the trend and decrease back in volume.
In addition, the Hyaluronic Acid in your lips can also be dissolved with hyalase. Suppose you went to a less quality clinic where it went wrong then with an injection of hyalase you can solve the problem in no time. Sarasin Clinic can also help you with this. If necessary, give us a call in advance or send some photos so that we can brief our plastic surgeon in time. That way we can help you in no time on the way to the look you've always envisioned.
Creating Symmetry
Sometimes people will plump up the lips to create more symmetry. From psychological research shows that people with symmetrical faces are often more attractive found more attractive. With fillers, you can give nature a hand and create more symmetry in your face.
It is important, however, that your esthetician first find out why your lips are not symmetrical. It may be due to a lack of volume, but there may be other causes behind the asymmetry (such as the action of muscles).
Therefore, before treatment, you may want to check with your treating physician to examine where the asymmetry comes from. Then the doctor can fill your lips with the necessary lip fillers in the right place. Et voila, job done!
Reduce signs of aging
As the years progress, all sorts of lines and wrinkles appear. Even our mouths are affected. Where we used to have full lips, now only thin lines remain. The corners of our mouths sag towards our chin and our lip edge is no longer as tight and beautifully defined as it was when we were 18 years old.
We can't turn back the clock to the times when we had fuller lips. But if you are bothered by those subtle signs of your skin aging, a filler treatment can put you out of your misery. How. You can read about that below.
Causes of skin aging
As we age, our lips lose volume. This is because we produce less collagen and elastin. Collagen provides the strength of our skin, while elastin ensures that our skin remains elastic. Due to a decrease in collagen slackens our skin and the retroughion of elastin our skin becomes less elastic.
On top of that you have the contribution of external factors, such as UV rays from the sun, damage from possibly smoking and the grooves that come into your face from repeating certain expressions over and over. Add to that your genetic predisposition and you have the full aging picture.
Using fillers against skin aging
The lost volume of the lips can be revived by injecting Hyaluronic acid-based fillers into the lips. With that, you're not just going to plump up the lips; once injected, Hyaluronic Acid also attracts the moisture that's inside the lips. Thus, everything reconnects nicely, giving the lips a fuller look.
Fillers against collapsed lip corners
As we age, not only does the volume of the lips themselves decrease, but the region around the lips gradually begins to sag. A typical symptom is sunken lip corners. This can give you a rather somber or glum appearance .
Plumping up your lips with lip fillers can help you regain a fresh look by "lifting" the corners of your lips with fillers. So you see, plumping up your lips can also be done in a very subtle way! Sometimes a small adjustment can make a big difference.
Leveling the lip edge
The upper lip is not spared from wrinkles either. What we often see there are vertical wrinkles just above the lip margin. Especially with smokers these types of wrinkles occur because they often spout the mouth when smoking. This is also due to the general harmfulness of a cigarette.
These types of lines make you look older than you actually are. Fortunately, you can use fillers in the lips to restore an even look to the area above the lip edge. Smoothing the lip edge gives you a more youthful appearance.
Nose-lip crease
Another typical phenomenon that comes along with age is the appearance of the famous nose-lip fold. This refers to the folds in the area between the side of the nose and the lips. Such a fold sometimes gives the face a tired appearance.
In this case, you can also use fillers in the lips to smooth out the folds, so to speak. The Hyaluronic Acid gives the skin enough volume, eliminating the folds from the skin. This leads to a very natural result and a youthful appearance.
Enhancement of the cupid eye
A final aging symptom that you can address with fillers is the cupido arch. Fillers in the lips are often used to create this arch because it is associated with a young appearance.
The fillers in the lips can be placed so that a cupido arch is formed by the upper lip. The result of this treatment with filler also looks very natural.

Filler lips: price
Lip filling, how much does it cost? The price depends, of course, on what result you want for the treated area: fuller lips, more symmetry, defining the cupid's bow or getting rid of the nose-lip fold.
Together with you, the esthetician will determine what the desired results and how much budget you have for lip fillers. Next, the doctor will look at the unique characteristics of your face and determines what dose of filler is needed.
For example, suppose you have a limited budget or want very subtle results, then a smaller dose of filler will be used. Would you like very pronounced results? Then your doctor will use more filler.
Usually 1 ml is injected and we evaluate afterwards whether you have achieved the desired result with it or not. The price of lip fillers with us is per syringe of 1 ml calculated.
