10 most frequently asked questions about filler treatment
The filler is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures in recent years. Not surprisingly, because of its multi-functionality, it can be used for numerous purposes. It gives your face a smooth and voluminous look, gets rid of wrinkles or gives your lips a fuller appearance. In short, it allows you to subtly change your face without surgery.
Is eternal youth really that easy to obtain? Under the motto "think before you leap," we would like to answer the most frequently asked questions about fillers.
What is a filler?
Let's start with the basics. Because before you apply anything to your body, it's important to know exactly what it is. A filler is a liquid, gel-like substance. That gel is often made up of Hyaluronic Acid, which is a substance native to the body. In a filler treatment, you inject that gel under your skin with a thin needle.
It is important to distinguish between Botox and fillers. Both Botox and fillers fall under the umbrella term "injectables," yet they differ in how they work. Botox relaxes muscles, while fillers restore volume to the skin.
What does a filler do?
You can do a lot by plumping up. For example, it can make your facial skin and lips tighter and more voluminous, and it helps to emphasize certain facial features more or less. You can also use it to create more symmetry or adjust proportions.
At Sarasin, we mainly use the Hyaluronic Acid filler. It has a specific effect and is temporary, making it our preferred choice. In addition, Hyaluronic Acid is a substance found naturally in the skin. So by using a Hyaluronic Acid filler, you are injecting a substance naturally found in the skin.
How does a filler work?
A filler literally does what it says: it fills in the skin. That filling happens for a variety of reasons. For example, over the years you produce less collagen, so the skin loses elasticity, and thus volume.
By injecting fillers where your face has sagged a bit, you recreate an even surface. Want to know how this is done? In this video you will find a detailed explanation. The effect of fillers depends on which type of fillers you choose and which area you treat.
In addition, a filler can also add volume in areas you feel you have too little of. For example, people often opt for treatment of the lips. In such a treatment, you can go as far as you want. You can choose a natural result, or a pronounced effect. It all depends on how much filler you use.
What types of filler exist?
There are both permanent and non-permanent or semi-permanent fillers. The latter are often based on collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite or polylactic acid (poly-L-lactic acid, PLLA). A temporary filler leaves the body after several months or years as they break down naturally. At Sarasin Clinic, we work almost exclusively with non-permanent fillers. Permanent fillers mainly find their application in plastic surgery.
Permanent fillers
This kind is often based on polymer hydrogel, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane, LIS). The permanent filler is present in the body for life. It sounds very tempting, but the only way to remove it from your body is through surgery. Furthermore, it often leads to negative side effects and complications which is why most forms are banned.
Curious about the placement, application and complications of each type of filler? Then be sure to check out the guideline from the Dutch Association for Dermatology and Venereology (NVDV).
How long do the results of filler treatments last?
The durability of the treatment depends on which kind is injected into the skin. You have fillers that leave the body after several months or years. These are also called temporary. The permanent ones remain in the skin for your entire life.
Furthermore, the duration of treatment results also depends on the area treated and the patient themselves. For example, a hyaluronic acid-based filler has the fastest fading results. The effects of a hyaluronic acid filler last between 6 and 18 months.
What areas can a filler be used for?
Fillers each serve a specific area of the face and, based on their properties, are intended only for those areas. As a result, they may not be injected into other areas. Thus, there is lip filler, nose filler, cheekbone filler, jawline filler and tear trough filler. For example, a lip filler serves only to obtain fuller lips and not to combat wrinkles.
As you can see, the possibilities are quite extensive. In each zone, the filler can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, in the lips it can boost volume, define the lip edge or create a cupid's eye. In the eye area, it can be used to address sagging skin or to correct puffiness and dark circles.
Fillers for the whole face
In addition, a filler can also be applied to the entire face. This is called a liquid facelift. This involves adding volume at different levels of the face.
Another nice application of the filler is the profhilo treatment. In this, the filler is used to boost the appearance of the skin. In fact, Hyaluronic Acid is known for its ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. As a result, Hyaluronic Acid is able to give the skin a hydrated, glowy look.
How much does a filler cost?
For fillers, you usually pay between 300 and 500 euros per syringe (1ml). Prices depend on which kind you use and in which zone you apply it. There are guide prices for each zone, but the exact price varies from person to person.
It's best to avoid an overly cheap cosmetic treatment with fillers. Cheap fillers are often unreliable and the results can turn out badly. Especially when it comes to cheap permanent fillers, it is important to be critical.
Because we take a personalized approach, it is best to contact an attending physician to discuss the exact price of your desired filler treatment.
Is filler treatment painful?
The treatment itself
One of the most important questions about filler treatment: does it hurt? A needle going into your skin is never a pleasant thought. It's also true that filler treatments can feel fairly uncomfortable.
But you probably won't experience more than an uncomfortable feeling. All you'll feel is a small prick. Are you in pain quickly? Then we have a high-quality surgical numbing cream to accommodate you. After anesthesia, you won't feel anything from the treatment.
Side effects after treatment
For up to two days after the treatment itself, you may still experience side effects such as swelling, bruising and bruising. This is perfectly normal and will disappear on its own. Sometimes you may experience side effects from the treatment for longer than two days. Especially after treatments of the nose, tear trough and lips, you may suffer from swelling for longer.
Can filler treatment be harmful?
Are fillers harmful? That's a question that may be on everyone's mind. And rightly so. It is good to think about what you are literally injecting into your body. We reassure you immediately: fillers are not harmful.
There is, of course, a "but. A filler treatment can be harmful if it is performed by an esthetician with poor expertise or by faulty means. Since the face is your signboard, you probably would prefer not to have complications such as hard lumps, visibility of the filler or sensitivity.
Therefore, we always recommend doing plenty of research on the cosmetic clinic where you want to have your treatment done. Read reviews, look at before and after photos and ask critical questions. Furthermore, it is also interesting to check whether the plastic surgeon is registered. This is the case when the Riziv number ends in 210. You can find a list of registered plastic surgeons on the RBSPS site.
How do I choose the right filler?
- Making the right choice is not an easy task. That's why we recommend opting for an esthetician who knows which filler to use why. For example, at Sarasin we opt for hyaluronic acid-based fillers because hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our skin. Furthermore, such fillers are temporary and hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body itself after some time.
- Your doctor decides which type will be injected into the area you wish to address. This is why it is important to choose a cosmetic doctor who specializes. At Sarasin, we always give honest advice and consult with you about your filler treatment options to get the best result for you. Our cosmetic doctors all have years of experience in applying fillers and some are even authorities in this field.
