The possibilities of fillers in the lips

Everyone has heard of fillers for lips. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. Invariably, we think of lip augmentation for fuller lips à la Kylie Jenner. But besides lip augmentation, lip fillers offer many other options.

The lips are such an important part of the face that we like them to look as perfect as possible. Of course, what exactly perfect means is different for everyone. We all have different desires when it comes to the appearance of our mouths.

Therefore, the possibilities of fillers to plump up the lips are numerous. For example, you can use them to improve the proportions of your lips, to create more symmetry or to better define the cupid arch.

How do fillers in the lips work?

Before we list what the possibilities of lip fillers are, it is important to understand how they work. Therefore, we briefly explain what substance(s) fillers are composed of, how we apply them and how many fillers you will need if you want to fill your lips.

Hyaluronic acid as a base material

  • Fillers for the lips always consist of Hyaluronic Acid (a body's own substance) combined with another substance to ensure the durability of the filler. We call this cross-linking. Why fill the lips with Hyaluronic Acid? Because it is a substance naturally found in our body.
  • Hyaluronic acid adds volume and firmness to lips where it is needed. Lip filling with fillers can therefore help restore or add volume through the action of Hyaluronic Acid.

Applying in the lip

  • How do we apply Hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers? The filling itself is done with a fine needle (cannula) to cause as little trauma to the lips as possible. That way, we limit any swelling and bruising afterwards.
  • To reduce pain during the treatment, we use a surgical grade numbing cream. As a result, at most you will experience an uncomfortable feeling when the lips are injected. Filling the lips does not take long (maximum 30 minutes). So that uncomfortable feeling is only for a very short time.
  • For the application of fillers in the lips, there are different techniques. We use serial punctures and linear threading (Russian method). Which technique we use and whether we combine techniques depends on the desired shape of your lips.
  • Because every lip is different and everyone wants different results, there is no universal way to inject lip filler. Where, how deep and what amount of filler we apply depends on each person.
  • The location and depth of the injection also determine what will change the appearance of the lip. An experienced doctor knows exactly where to inject the fillers to achieve a certain result. Because of this, there is a wide variation in the possible results of fillers in the lips.

Lip augmentation for fuller lips

  • The first option we discuss is immediately one of the most popular, which is lip augmentation. In this treatment, we use lip fillers to increase the size of the lips through the injection of Hyaluronic Acid.
  • Lip augmentation is especially sought after by people with thin lips, because narrow lips quickly give you a severe appearance. By making your lips bigger, you create fuller lips that give you a softer appearance.
  • Beautiful, full lips are very trendy. One advantage of lip filler lips is that they are temporary. That is, if full lips are ever no longer the way to go are, your lips can evolve with the trend and decrease back in volume.
  • In addition, the Hyaluronic Acid in your lips can also be dissolved with hyalase. Suppose you went to a less quality clinic where things went wrong. An injection of hyalase will fix the problem in no time.

Creating Proportions

You don't necessarily have to fill both lips. You may also want to make just your upper lip or just your lower lip bigger. This is done, for example, to increase the golden ratio (1:1.618) to achieve.

For example, it sometimes happens that the lower lip is much smaller than the upper lip, so the ratio between the two lips is not correct. In that case, you can create a more proportional ratio by increasing one of the lips in volume.

Creating Symmetry

  • Lip fillers can also be used to create more symmetry. From psychological research shows that people with symmetrical faces are often found more attractive. With fillers, you can give nature a hand and create more symmetry in your face.
  • It is important, however, that your esthetician first find out why your lips are not symmetrical. It may be because of a lack of volume, but there may be other causes behind the asymmetry.
  • Therefore, before treatment, you can first examine with your doctor where the asymmetry comes from. Then the doctor can fill your lips with the necessary lip fillers in the right place. Et voila, job done!

Aging and fillers in the lips

As the years progress, all sorts of lines and wrinkles appear. Even our mouths are affected. Where we used to have full lips, now only thin lines remain. The corners of our mouths sag further and further toward the chin, and the edges of our lips are no longer as tight and defined as they were when we were 18 years old.

We can't turn back the clock to the times when we had fuller lips. But if you are bothered by those subtle signs of your skin aging, a filler treatment can put you out of your misery. How. You can read about that below.

What happens to our lips as we age?

  • Because you are choosing lip filler treatment to combat the signs of aging, it is interesting to learn the science behind those changes understanding. As we age, our lips lose volume. This is because we produce less collagen and elastin.
  • Collagen provides the strength of our skin while elastin ensures that our skin remains elastic. A decrease in collagen causes our skin to sag and the retroughion in elastin causes our skin to become less elastic.
  • On top of that, you have the contribution of external factors such as UV rays from the sun, damage from possibly smoking, and the grooves that come into your face because you keep repeating certain expressions. Add to that your disposition and you have the full aging picture.

Regain volume with lip fillers

Due to the combination of everything you read above, lips become thinner as you age. Reviving that volume can be done by injecting Hyaluronic Acid-based fillers into the lips. By doing so, you're not just going to plump up the lips. Once injected, Hyaluronic Acid also attracts the moisture that is in the lips. Thus, everything reconnects nicely, giving the lips a fuller look.

Collapse of the lip corners

  • As we age, not only the volume of the lips themselves decreases. The region around the lips also gradually begins to sag. A typical feature of this is sunken lip corners. This can give you a rather gloomy or glum appearance.
  • Filling your lip with lip fillers can help give you a fresh look again by "lifting" the lip corners with fillers. As you can see, filling in your lips can also be done in a very subtle way. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a big difference.

Leveling the lip edge

  • The upper lip is not spared from wrinkles either. What we often see there are vertical wrinkles just above the lip edge. Especially in smokers, these types of wrinkles occur because they often spout the mouth when smoking. This is also due to the general harmfulness of a cigarette.
  • These types of lines make you look older than you actually are. Fortunately, you can use fillers in the lips to restore an even look to the area above the lip edge. Smoothing the lip edge gives you a more youthful appearance.

Nose-lip crease

Another typical phenomenon that comes along with age is the emergence of the famous nose-lip fold. This refers to the folds in the area between the side of the nose and the lips. Such folding sometimes gives the face a tired appearance.

In this case, you can also use fillers in the lips to smooth out the folds, so to speak. Hyaluronic acid gives the skin enough volume that the folds disappear from the skin. This leads to a very natural result and a youthful appearance.

A final aging symptom that you can address with fillers is the cupido arch. Fillers in the lips are often used to create this arch because it is associated with a young appearance.

The fillers in the lips can be placed so that a cupido arch is formed by the upper lip. The result of this treatment with filler also looks very natural.

Restrictions

Although lip filling with fillers is a very good solution to adjust the appearance of your lips, lip fillers also have some limitations. The biggest one is that lip fillers require regular reapplication.

Lip filling is a temporary solution

  • Hyaluronic acid-based fillers that we use to fill lips are temporary fillers. After a maximum of about six to twelve months, the lip filler is broken down by our body. Because the filler is temporary, the lip filler treatment must be repeated every so often.
  • Repeating the lip filler treatment continuously can be inconvenient. For example, at least once a year you have to experience the side effects of the treatment such as swelling and bruising.
  • Therefore, for those who have experimented enough with temporary fillers, there are also permanent fillers for the lips. These are also called lipofilers. In a lipofilling you are going to inject your own body fat into the lips to achieve a permanently fuller lip.

Fillers in the lips are not for everyone

  • Unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy the benefits and possibilities of lip fillers. For example, you cannot have your lips filled if you have blood clotting disorders or uncontrolled diabetes. People with sensitivity to Hyaluronic Acid are also not eligible for lip filler treatment.

Fillers lips: Which kind do I choose?

By now it's clear: If you want to change the appearance of your lips, you have plenty of options to choose from in terms of filler treatments. So how do you make the right choice? Which lip fillers are right for you?

Base yourself on what you like, not trends

The time has come, you've decided. You want to fill your lips with Hyaluronic Acid to get fuller or more beautiful lips . The important thing is to stay true to yourself. Always ask yourself the question "why do I want to plump up my lips?

You may find that you mainly feel external pressure to put fillers in your lips. Of course, it's also possible that you're doing it because you really want it yourself. If it feels right for yourself, and you know you're making a choice you fully support, then you can give yourself the green light.

Consult your plastic surgeon

  • Now that you yourself are 100% sure you want fillers for your lips, it's time to book a consultation with your esthetician. Make sure the doctor you choose for the filler treatment is specialized. Only then will you get a good, natural result.
  • A reliable doctor at the right clinic will listen to your needs and tell you if the result of the lip filler treatment you want suits your face. A good plastic surgeon will always give you honest advice. You still choose whether or not to follow the advice.
  • Lip fillers should preferably be placed in the best clinic with renowned doctors. That way, you can be sure that the risk of complications is as low as possible and that the outcome of the treatment will suit your needs.
